Green Paper on Children in Care

Could you foster Johnny?

Foster children

We are looking for foster carers for Johnny. Could you be his new foster carers? Why not find out more?

On October 9th, 2006 the Government published a Green Paper on Children in Care.

The Adoption & Fostering Information Line broadly welcomes this initiative.

"It has been a well known fact that children in care have tended to leave school with little or no educational awards. Have been propelled towards living independently, irrespective of their maturity or desire, and been over represented in our prisons, unemployment queues and among the homeless." - Kevin Jones (AFIL Chief Executive)

The Green Paper contains a range of proposals on tackling many of the inequalities that children in care face. It suggests that children could remain in foster care after they are 18 and that more should be done to avoid them being moved through a series of foster care placements. The paper also suggests that children in care should remain at the same school, even if they move to a different area and that a head teacher for children in care for each area should be appointed.
